BCQS sponsors the International Arbitration conference in Guyana

BCQS recently sponsored The Arbitration Conference held April 25, 2018 at Duke Lodge Hotel, Kingston, Georgetown, Guyana. The Conference was the first of its kind in Guyana and was hosted by the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) Caribbean Branch, an internationally recognized body promoting the use of Alternative Dispute Resolution. It was being held in collaboration with The University of Guyana; the Caribbean International Chamber of Commerce; the International Center for the Settlement of Disputes; CARICOM; and the Dispute Resolution Center.

The arbitration conference focused on the fundamental workings of international commercial arbitration proceedings and included two days of conference workshops where participants were guided through each stage of a dispute between an investor and a state under the rules of the International Convention for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID).

The conference was a success and saw participants from across the region and beyond including arbitrators, government officials, lawyers, investment professionals, judges and representatives from regional organizations who shared their invaluable knowledge and experience, highlighting various issues, opportunities and emerging trends.

The conference was attended by BCQS Directors Chris Graham and Sanjay Amin, who are both Associates of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. Chris noted “These alternative dispute resolution (ADR) methods are increasingly becoming the preferred mode of resolving disputes and BCQS’s involvement here underlies our commitment to being at the forefront of construction industry dispute resolution in the region.”
